Issues
Political influence: My former boss, U.S. Senator Gary Hart. He was a Democrat who was strong on national defense and an advocate for Western issues.
Top priority: 1. Strengthening our economy by controlling the deficit and creating jobs. 2. Securing our border. 3. Improving education by putting more resources into the classroom and making sure we retain first-class teachers and principals.
Respected opponent: Ronald Reagan. He helped bring back confidence in our economy, pride in our military and a belief that the spirit which has always powered America can overcome any obstacle.
Wall St bailout: I think Wall Street’s greed has gotten out of control, and they seem to be focused only on figuring out ways to game the system, make an easy buck and avoid competition. The bailout is a prime example. With the bailout, American taxpayers took all the risk, and Wall Street took the reward. Wall Street needs a dose of transparency and accountability or Main Street investors will never, ever, find a level playing field.
Stimulus Act: I would have pushed different legislation to stimulate our economy. I think there should have been greater emphasis on providing incentives for small businesses to grow and create jobs and there needed to be more attention paid to how this bill would balloon the federal deficit.
Health care overhaul: There are aspects, like mandates, that make me very uncomfortable. But I like that the bill includes things we can all agree on, like competition to drive down costs and outlawing insurance denials based on pre-existing conditions. I feel that Congress should always be looking to improve the legislation, but I won’t vote for any modifications that increase its overall cost.
