Issues:
Political influence: In terms of historical figures, I’m a great admirer of Abraham Lincoln. As for more contemporary political mentors, I look to John F. Kennedy and Jimmy Carter.
Budget recommendations: 1) Review all existing tax credits for possible elimination. 2) Consider changes and possible expansion of the types of transactions that the state sales tax is applied to. 3) Identify and close tax loopholes. 4) Identify and implement, where feasible, increased efficiencies in the delivery of public services (e.g. consolidation of school districts or electronic record keeping.)
Other concerns: 1) Strengthening the state’s economy, particularly in area of job creation and business expansion. 2) Rebuilding a strong public school system.
Fiscal philosophy: Elected officials should be good stewards of taxpayer dollars by: 1) Establishing a fair and equitable tax and revenue structure; 2) adopting budgets that direct public money to public priorities; and 3) managing revenues and expenditures in the most transparent, efficient manner possible.
Background & experience: I have an advanced degree in the “business” of government. I have 34 years work experience in the nonprofit sector. I have been involved in community and civic affairs during my 37 years residency in LD1. And I have previously served as an elected official.
Prop. 100 sales tax: I favored the temporary sales tax increase to prevent further deep cuts to education and to give the state time to do a comprehensive review and overhaul of Arizona’s tax and revenue structure.
Pro-life/pro-choice: I consider this a matter of individual rights, both reproductive rights and health care privacy rights. I support a woman’s right to choose birth-control methods and family-planning services that are appropriate for her.
One last thing: As an elected official, my work ethic is to do my homework on the issues, listen to all voices in the public policy debate, “play well with others,” and make informed decisions.
Campaign Finance: public.
