State lawmakers from both parties are calling for hearings to look into the escape of three violent inmates from a private prison in northwestern Arizona.
On Wednesday, Democrats sent a letter to House Speaker Kirk Adams and Senate President Bob Burns, both Republicans, demanding legislative hearings. Democrats have tried to link the escape to Republican Gov. Jan Brewer.
Earlier in statements on the Senate floor, at least two Republicans backed the idea of hearings. Ron Gould of Lake Havasu City and Russell Pearce of Mesa said the public deserves answers but cautioned against a rush to judgment.
In a statement, Burns said he would not schedule any hearings before seeing a report from the Department of Corrections.
