Education: B.A., geography, Indiana University, 1994; Brophy College Preparatory, 1990.

Political experience: Elected to Maricopa Unified School District Governing Board in 2010, served as president first two years.

Interests: Nieces (ages 2, 3, 4, 5), bicycling, hiking, IU basketball, Sigma Chi Fraternity, traveling, volunteering.

Two biggest issues: Jobs/economy: I will work to improve education and workforce development; be more “business friendly,” including eliminate/prevent unnecessary regulation; invest in business creation, expansion and relocation; take advantage of global trade opportunities. I will proactively advocate for policies that grow our economy via support of existing businesses and acquisition of new companies. Education: I will work to increase equality among schools, decrease regulation, improve (relevant) student achievement, encourage entrepreneurial culture, dedicate more money to the classrooms and (good) teachers.

Budget priorities: “Investing” versus “spending.” Investments that will have a positive impact on future budgets (i.e. creating economic growth opportunities, even if predicted return is not short-term), including areas such as education, transportation and business development, should be pursued, even though the impact would not be noticed quickly enough to positively impact legislators’ reelection efforts. Our ability to achieve all of the state’s long-term goals is dependent on how well – and how soon – we improve education. In addition to K-12, we must invest in workforce development and higher education and always be mindful of the end goal – providing excellent employment opportunities for Arizona youth in Arizona. Keeping Arizonans safe.

Fiscal philosophy: Conservative and focused on investing versus spending.

Common Core: Yes, because improved critical-thinking and problem-solving skills will help Arizona children, strengthen our families, communities and businesses, and grow our state’s economy.

Gifts to elected officials: Yes, and I look forward to working with my colleagues next year to determine what changes need to be made to increase Arizonans’ confidence in their government and elected officials.

Transparency in government: Trust and transparency go hand-in-hand and both are paramount to effective government. After all, it is the public’s money with which government operates.
