Two biggest issues: Education: Building a world-class K-12 and higher education system that will produce the qualified workers needed to build Arizona’s economy. This includes adequate funding, measurable, competitive performance standards and educational options for parents and students. Jobs and the economy: Maintain continued budget stability while focusing on key state priorities for long-term success. Examples include water, land, infrastructure, and maintaining a stable health care system.
Budget priorities: Education and child welfare are my top budget priorities. I support thoughtful, sustainable restoration of cuts necessitated in prior years while maintaining fiscal stability. Continued evaluation of targeted tax cuts previously enacted and comprehensive review of current tax policies to ensure we are achieving the desired results of economic growth and high quality job creation to grow revenues. Continued focus on government efficiencies.
Fiscal philosophy: Fiscally conservative. Acknowledging government’s role in providing core services: public safety, health, education and welfare.
Common Core: The standards are measurable, and when achieved will make Arizona competitive with other states. Local boards can select individualized curriculum delivery systems. It will enable us to compete for high-paying industries and fill the demand for qualified applicants.
Gifts to elected officials: I support reforms. I would make the reporting requirements more frequent and more comprehensive, in terms of reporting required by elected officials and those who interact with them.
Transparency in government: Transparency is the key to meaningful reform, as evidenced by the CPS reforms I am working on. Without that transparency we cannot identify problems and define fixes, measure outcomes.
Pro-life / pro-choice: I am pro-life.
Public policy advice: I have a number of respected policy makers within the Legislature who are experts on any given issue. In addition, District 28 is blessed with many former elected officials to whom I turn. And, there are many policy and advocacy groups that are excellent resources. I rely on all these and more to better understand an issue.
