Arizona since: 2005

Occupation: Small business owner, Group and Taylor Street Group; chief of staff, District 7, City of Phoenix 2008-10; project manager, Riester Public Affairs, 2006-08; Corporal, USMC Infantry.

Marital: Married

Education: B.A., international relations, Harvard University, 2004.

Political experience: Kate Gallego for City Council; chief of staff, Phoenix City Councilman Michael Nowakowski; vice chair, AZ Democratic Party; organizer, Harry Mitchell for Congress; organizer, No on Prop 107.

Legis exp: House 2011-March 2014 (Resigned March 17, 2014 to run for CD-7); Dem minority leader 2013-March 2014.

Interests: Hiking South Mountain Park.

Top priority: My top priority will be improving educational and economic opportunities for veterans.

Initial legislation: The first piece of legislation I will look to introduce would cap the annual increase in college tuition. Higher education should be a path to advancement, not enormous debt.

Federal deficit: To reduce the federal deficit, I will first look to close tax loopholes and reorient our military priorities to reflect our current strategic needs rather than Cold War threats.

Federal spending in AZ: Phoenix’s expansion of mass transit, especially light rail, has been enormously successful. In Congress, I will look to direct more infrastructure spending to expand mass transit in Phoenix.

Respected opponent: I have a lot of respect for former State Senator Carolyn Allen. She was one of the last moderate Republicans in the Arizona Legislature. We need more leaders like her who can work with both sides.

Public policy advice: I’m lucky to have a number of people in my life I trust on public policy issues, including my wife Kate, Chad Campbell, Raul Grijalva, Harry Mitchell, Greg Stanton, Michael Nowakowski and my mom.
