Two biggest issues: Hyper-partisanship in the Legislature has distracted us from focusing on economic issues to fighting over political, ideological issues. I will work with fellow legislators, regardless of party, to improve Arizona and refuse to be distracted by partisan, ideological sideshows like SB1062. The second issue facing Arizona’s future is a lack of long-term economic investment. In part due to these ideological sideshows, the Legislature has failed to meet the needs of our growing state. Without fundamental investments in Arizona’s educational system, transportation, water conservation & delivery and other important infrastructure, we will continue to lag behind the rest of the country in economic strength and job growth. To bring attention to Arizona’s outdated infrastructure, I will strengthen relationships with the business community, my colleagues and various experts to encourage collaboration and prioritization of these needs. Increasing access to education is the first priority on which to focus in the immediate future.

Budget priorities: My budget priorities are to ensure that we make long-term investments in Arizona by properly funding education and infrastructure. Education at all levels has been cut to devastating levels. Reinvesting in early childhood education, K-12, and higher education will have a great impact on our economic vitality. In order to have high-quality, high-wage jobs that make us globally competitive, we need to make sure that workforce development programs offered in high school, like JTEDs, to those offered in community colleges and our universities are funded enough to guarantee access for the average person in our community. In the long-term, this investment will boost state revenues as well. I will also prioritize spending HURF (Highway User Revenue Funding) money to improve our roads. By ensuring that our transportation infrastructure is sound, we can take full advantage of the commerce that passes through Arizona.

Fiscal philosophy: I am a pragmatist above all else. As a legislator, I am responsible for ensuring that taxpayer money is invested in our community and spent wisely, efficiently and effectively.

Common Core: Although a single test should not be the only way to assess success in the classroom, we need a way to measure academic achievements in Arizona. The Common Core standards provide an outline for us to ensure that Arizona’s children will be competitive with students around the country when they graduate from our schools. Because Common Core provides those standards, while still allowing Arizona almost total discretion over curriculum and the operation of our schools, I support Common Core.

Gifts to elected officials: Reforms are necessary regarding the laws dealing with gifts to elected officials. As an example, all money spent to lobby elected officials must be fully disclosed, including conferences the officials attend. Any money spent to influence an official must be traceable to the original source so that taxpayers can understand who is influencing their legislators.

Transparency in government: To restore honor to the job of an elected official, it is crucial for the public to be aware of decisions made at every level of the process of policymaking. We should be held accountable for all decisions made on behalf of our constituents.

Pro-life / pro-choice: A woman’s decision to have an abortion is her own, made with consultation from her loved ones and/or doctor.

Public policy advice: When I make policy decisions, I ask for advice from constituents first and foremost. I also ask for advice from experts in the policy issue at hand, from business and municipalities that will be affected by the decision and from laborers, who will often have to implement the decision. The issue at hand determines the advice I seek.
