Children: 6

Education: B.S., accounting, BYU, 1980.

Political experience: Member of Mitt Romney’s AZ finance team.

Legis exp: Senate since 2013.

Interests: Spending time at our ranch with my family.

Two biggest issues: Elevating our agenda: Focusing on impactful topics every session and not getting distracted with symbolic legislation. Civility in our discussion: Our political process produces better solutions when all sides participate in civil, respectful debate.

Budget priorities: The best way to increase revenues is through economic recovery. I’ve led efforts to bring major companies like Apple and Tesla to the valley. A rising tide lifts all ships. I’ve also fought for the implementation of money-saving technologies in our state government operations.

Fiscal philosophy: I am an economic conservative who believes that cutting costs, not raising taxes, is the best way to manage our budget.

Common Core: In business I learned that things will not improve if they are not measured. Standards allow us to compare apples to apples. As for the specific standards we call Common Core, I’m not wedded to them if there are better alternatives. So far, nothing has been proposed, and I feel that some standards are better than no standards.

Gifts to elected officials: I don’t like freebies being offered to lawmakers. Whether well-intentioned or not, gifts from lobbyists can muddy the waters. As with many things in life, sunshine is the best antiseptic. Stringent disclosure laws provide transparency to the process which helps keep gift-giving in check.

Transparency in government: Transparency in the legislative process is paramount. In fact, I have made this my calling card. One of the first things I did in office was to create AZvoices.gov. Through this website, voters can see, in real time, every word of every bill being discussed at the Capitol. Voters can follow the entire legislative process and see who is crafting and changing bills. Additionally, voters can voice their opinion about each bill before the Legislature. We are the first state in the nation to offer this kind of transparency and participation to the general public. It is one of my proudest achievements.

Pro-life / pro-choice: Pro-life.

Public policy advice: My legislative role model has been Stan Turley. I have pages and pages of notes from meetings with him seeking advice. He helped me tremendously as we were creating AZvoices.gov. He was one of Arizona’s greatest public servants. Stan passed away this month and leaves behind a legacy I strive to emulate. My wife, Christi, and I have decided to endow the Stan Turley Statesmanship Award which will be given, each year, to a state legislator who has shown outstanding statesmanship during the legislative session.
