Munsil defends McCain, but leaves door ajar for Senate run

Len Munsil, for the most part, has been quiet since he was defeated by Janet Napolitano in the 2006 race for governor, but he remains among a group of politicians who have won and lost and whose names always come up as potential candidates as election years near. Sen. John McCain’s got another 18 months on his term, and so far has drawn Chris Simcox as a primary opponent, amid speculation others, such as J.D. Hayworth and Munsilmight end up trying to get the GOP nomination. “I am flattered by the many people who have encouraged me to consider running for the United States Senate in 2010,” wrote Munsil in an e-mail to our reporter. “Although I have disagreed often with Sen. McCain on matters of conservative principle, I have great respect for him and his service to the country and I have supported him in his previous campaigns.”
