Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies say they arrested 40 suspected illegal immigrants in a 36-hour period ending Wednesday.
Thirty-one were transferred into the custody of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Deputies say the arrests came as a result of multiple traffic stops and an investigation into an apparent Mesa drop house.
Nine of the suspects were booked into a county jail on human smuggling charges. The remaining 31 suspects were released into ICE custody in accordance with federal law.
