Arizona authorities plan to release more details at a Monday news conference about their bust involving a major drug smuggling ring.
Multiple suspected smugglers were arrested and thousands of pounds of pot were seized in the Thursday bust at multiple homes in Phoenix, Casa Grande, Maricopa and other cities.
It was the culmination of what U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement described as a long-term, far-reaching investigation of the smuggling ring by the agency and the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s spokesman Elias Johnson says that the bust is the biggest ever for his agency.
Thursday’s seizure involved the same ring targeted earlier this month in a raid in which 17 suspected drug smugglers were arrested. About 935 pounds of marijuana, 12 weapons, ammunition and cash were seized in that bust.
