Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Wednesday ordered state agencies to deny driver’s licenses and other public benefits to young illegal immigrants who obtain work authorizations under a new Obama administration policy.

In an executive order, Brewer said she was reaffirming the intent of current Arizona law denying taxpayer-funded public benefits and state identification to illegal immigrants.

Young illegal immigrants around the nation on Wednesday began the process of applying for federal work permits under the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

The federal policy defers deportations for that group if they meet certain criteria, including arrival in the United States before they turned 16 and no convictions for certain crimes.

After President Barack Obama announced the policy change in June, Brewer labeled it “backdoor amnesty” and political pandering by the Democratic president.

Arizona has been in the vanguard of states enacting laws against illegal immigration.

The U.S. Supreme Court in June overturned parts of the Arizona enforcement law known as SB1070 but ruled that a key provision on requiring police to ask people about their immigration status under certain circumstances can be implemented.

The Obama administration challenged that law in 2010 after Brewer signed it into law.

In the past decade, Arizona voters twice approved laws denying publicly funded services, such as in-state resident university tuition rates, to illegal immigrants unless mandated by the federal government.

Brewer’s order said the policy’s federal paperwork doesn’t confer lawful status on illegal immigrants and won’t entitle them to Arizona public benefits.

However, it said the policy change “could result in some unlawfully present aliens inappropriately gaining access to public benefits contrary to the intent of Arizona voters and lawmakers who enacted laws expressly restricting access to taxpayer funded benefits and state identification.”

Brewer directed state agencies to start any necessary emergency rulemaking processes to implement her order.

Some protesters marched to the state Capitol on Wednesday night from the downtown Phoenix office of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition.

“We are saddened that Gov. Brewer is siding with the past, against progress, against young people and the general support the Dream Act has in the general population,” Dulce Matuz, Arizona ADAC chairman, said in a statement.

State Rep. Catherine Miranda, who supports the federal program, called Brewer’s action mean-spirited.

“She just continues to put obstacles in front of young people in Arizona,” the Phoenix Democrat said.

Rep. Martin Quezada, D-Phoenix, said he questioned whether the order would have much practical effect under Arizona’s current laws. But he said it served to demonize good kids who should be allowed to get state-issued identification and enter the workforce.

Arizona Democratic Party executive director Luis Heredia said Brewer’s order “fails to move Arizona forward on immigration reform. This amounts to a gubernatorial temper tantrum.”

  1. Jan Brewer has the biggest balls in the country. When you break the law you get punished – not rewarded. Illegal invasion is not a victimless crime – go to operationbodycount.com and see the faces and the stories of the slaughtered Americans – If we enforced our immigration laws all the 3000+ people killed on 911 would still be alive. I don’t want to pay for illegal invader’s children – I have enough to do to take care of mine – it is not the taxpaper’s mandate to take care of the world. Just because you get passed the border agents doesn’t give you the right to taxpayer benefits. We will stand behind Jan Brewer and I hope many more states help her and stand up against this “Dream” amnesty that the Americans voted against in 2010.

  2. Really!? Because applying for public benefits is the reason that people want to have their paperwork in order. I guess many in Arizona do not realize that immigrants legal or illegal are a great economic force that the states benefit from their labor, from tax collection, etc…as of yet I have not seen nor heard an immigrant whip out their \I am illigal I do not have to pay taxes\ card when they go about their everyday lives.
About the public benefits issue…illegal immigrants are NOT elligible for publc benefits and legal immigrants have a 5 yr wait period before they can apply, plus if Arizona pays attention most immigrants ego does not allow them to ask for those services and only use it as a last resort. Just in case…children born in US soil are citizens, just like any other child, and as such eligible for benefits. The economic, migratory status of their parents does not make them less eligible.

Please read the elegibility requirements to apply for public benefits before saying anything, they are very clear. 4. Brewer is right on target with this directive. Barry Hussein Soetoro says his fiat does not confer \legal status\ on the illegals…it only \defers\ deportation. Why, then, is he issuing \work permits?\ It’s because Libtards can’t think straight.

  5. This is what she wants to be known for? This is the legacy she wants to leave behind? In 15 years this will be the same as when we look back when the blacks were treated badly. She will be remembered as an ignorant, racist and a hateful person. She better get with the times cause change is coming

  6. Look, the law is the law. and of course certain one’s in our society think they are so special that laws (altho good for some) aren’t necessarily applicable to them because their cause is so noble. Then comes Obama who knows he’s on thin ice, so what to do? Exploit & use Americas Latino’s, there an ignorant bunch & won’t even realize the’re being ‘used!’
Wake up you narrow minded Chicano’s!!

  7. Way to go Governor Brewer for protecting your constituents!

The Odumbo Amnesty by fiat program is nothing more than an illegal bribe for hispanic votes this fall, however the states can shut him down under the 10th Amendment because this is a state’s rights issue. Estimates on Odumbo’s amnesty plan is already more than double what he originally stated, and he wants all their ‘undocumented’ votes.

The bottom line is, if you came here legally, welcome! If you are here illegally, please see yourself safely to the exit and apply to come in the front door just like everyone else that is waiting their turn. If your parents brought you here illegally, my sympathies, however you need to place the blame where it belongs: on your parents.

  8. She is not cruel or ignorant. I am proud of her. If they want to come over so damn bad, then work for it. Don’t come over saying you want to succeed and then cry like a ***** because you can’t get handouts. Work for it!

  9. You go, Gov. Brewer! Hope other states follow you. obama doesnn’t unred stand the meaning of the word ILLEGAL.

  10. I love the ignorance of some people! It makes me feel THAT much smarter! If anyone was truly informed… They would know that Obama’s Deferred Action is only going to go so far. It will help protect innocent and PRODUCTIVE young people be protected from removal and will get them work authorization, yes they will be able to get driver’s licenses but who said anything about state benefits?! A legal U.S. resident doesn’t even qualify for state benefits! People can be so close minded. This action is a GOOD thing for this country! Let’s face it, more than half of
the young people that will be applying are already working so it’s not like there will be another employment issue there! Open your minds people! Jan Brewer is an inhumane witch!!!

  11. How can this be good?
lets take a history lesson first. Before the “white man” came to the new world, this land had people living here. They were called Native Americas. meaning they were here FIRST!!. Europe then sends ships here with all of their people, be it French, British, Scottish, ETC. Heres an example the Mayflower . They take over the new world with brute force and higher tech of weaponry[i dont mean to sound evil] ( ie -rifle, swords, canons) they push the native Americans further in the new world. Now skipping some years people from Europe go to the new world to either escape religious prejudice, famine and other reasons. skipping some more years, 13 colonies have been around, but dont forget about the natives this was their land, everyone else that was born( 13 colonies and so on forth to present day in time frame ) here their decedents from some Europe estate and since the whole world starts to send people here you have this mix culture. very one in this country excluding those who are Native Americas are immigrants. This can be proven by looking at your family tree.

This said yes, illegal immigration should be better controlled, and organized. NOT DEPORTED, those kids that are raised here only know this, the US to be their home. its not their fault. if there are better forms of making illegals to legals faster thats better. because job $ wont go down because of people that are willing to take a pay cut to survive for the next day.

Now looking at the ” illegals took my job ”
America has always had this idea of the American dream. -look in your text book or wiki it-
In my opinion the American dream is something with great pay ($80,000/yr note this is the starting of a Mechanical Engineer) but this is just chump change to what the the %1 of america get paid yearly. Immigrants that are of adult age and really fit the category of ” illegal” being farmers, or cashiers, or maids, yeah they dont have a degree maybe but they might have a family that needs food. so if the idea is that America is scared that illegals take the farming jobs or cleaning people house/apts or whatever. America you can take those jobs because alot of undocumented students are pushing them selves to study and learn the hard stuff which alot of people dont want to learn and GET PAID FOR IT. Because if your good then what does being born here or not matter.

  12. @Montana w.e. – like being called a racist? calling Latinos ignorant and narrow minded? I’ve never met so many white americans that are ignorant of their heritage or the culture of other races. You should stay in Montana!
Thanks G.E.D. Brewer! You did it again, put AZ on the map for being a ridiculous state. Many of these young adults will out educate you and all the other small minded people with advanced college degrees and creating small businesses. As for sucking taxes, let me remind everyone this: everytime they purchase something, an Iphone, coffee, food – they ARE PAYING TAXES!!! Go back and live under a rock if you don’t want to live in the reality of this country changing.

  13. Well all right Arizona. Have read some of these comments about this and have to comment myself.
Sooo, the fact that someone came into this country illegally, live here, receive a high school education that we paid for, and now we should “help” them get a work visa. That we paid for.
And as for “those people” taking jobs from Americans? Well, the way I see it, we are partly to blame for that. Why? The people that offer them jobs under the table to save themselfs having to pay into benefit plans, unemployment and such.
If that would stop, then maybe “they” would not come here to get those “good jobs”
But for noiw, I like what Arizona is doing, and if I could, I would move there tomorrow.

  14. The real disappointment here is that the politicians are exploiting the plight of people that just want to be able to earn a living. It is a never ending debate that probably never get solved because the politicians don’t want it solved. It’s their ace in the hole to secure votes, on both sides. Lets face it, the illegal immigration has took it’s toll on the taxpayers and put a heavy burden on the schools and social programs made for the citizenry of the United States. Obama could car less about these people’s plight, he just wants to win votes. Governor Brewer is just protecting the dwindling assets of her state, and if I was treated the same way Obama treated her on more than one occasion, I’d do the same thing. Illegal immigrants are very resourceful, hard working people for the most part. Citizenship does not come easy, and freedom isn’t free. The best opportunity for these young immigrants is to head to the recruiter and enlist in the military as that puts them on the fastest track to full citizenship, they will get money for college, learn a skill, and if they get married they can have all the kids they want, and some actually like it and make it a career. After they get out they get VA benefits and their kids get college benefits also. It’s an all around win for the US, for them, and the rest of America. I think about the opportunities the Army opened up for me, and just shake my head in disgust watching as immigration reform protesters march for something that will probably never get fixed.

  15. Thank Gov. Brewer, we need more governor like you in all USA, we’re tired of illegal doing in our country. They only come to get our money, jobs, taxes and delinquent.

  16. What I dont understand is why these illegal mexican nationals dont reform their own govt.! Mexico has a wealth of oil and other commodities. But I guess that would take an effort, something their not willing to do apparently! We have laws regarding immigration, the people in the our nation that are bleeding hearts for the illegals are obviously not affected by the over population of them, but they soon will be and then I would like to hear their opinion! I for one do not support them in any way shape or form other than the govt stealing my money in the form of taxes to give it to them!
