3 bills targeting public unions set for hearing

Three bills being targeting public employee unions are set for their first hearing before an Arizona House of Representatives committee.

Two are being pushed by the conservative Goldwater Institute at Tuesday’s hearing to curb what it calls “the abuses of Big Labor.” Its proposals require employee union negotiations be done in public and would ban so-called release time where public employees can be paid while doing union work. A third bill would force each city or town council in the state to have a vote on whether to allow dues collections through paycheck deductions.

One union executive calls the bills unwarranted attacks on public employee unions. Roman Ulman of AFSCME Arizona People Conference notes the one requiring public negotiations would only apply to unions and not any other contract.
