Heard Museum to close in Surprise

The Surprise branch of the Heard Museum is closing at the end of the year.

Museum director Frank Goodyear Jr. says the long struggling museum is a victim of the recession and low visitation.

Like the main Heard Museum in Phoenix, the Surprise museum features Indian art and a history of the area.

Goodyear noted the Phoenix and Scottsdale museum’s are “performing well.”

Since 2006, Surprise has given the Heard Museum West $3.74 million toward building costs.

The city continued its support by giving $71,150 to help the museum balance its fiscal 2008 budget.
