Neglect of Arizona schools must stop with this election

Arizona Capitol Reports Staff//October 20, 2006//[read_meter]

Ever wondered why the Arizona Republican Party forks out so much money for the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction? What could public instruction for all our children possibly have to do with party politics?
Simple. It’s tacit bribery or payola. We’ll pay you to become superintendent of public instruction, and you agree not to fuss about crippling funding that keeps our schools at the bottom of the United States.
That way we can boast about our budget surplus with a clearer conscience.
Tom Horne is an implement, not a person, to the Republican Party. If he actually did his job and crusaded for decent school support, he would be dropped like a hot potato.
During an Oct. 2 television debate with Democratic candidate Jason Williams, Mr. Horne clearly showed his lack of initiative or even alarm that his schools are so terribly under-funded. He made a myopic evaluation of charter schools and insisted that they continue receiving less money than traditional schools. This despite repeated studies showing Arizona charter schools at peak performing levels.
As a published professor who has taught from pre-school to the university level in Arizona for more than a quarter century, and built more than one charter school in Arizona, I chastise all Arizona voters who vote Republican and allowed this deplorable educational neglect to persist. Please, for the sake of our children, vote for Jason Williams for superintendent of public instruction.
