Capitol quotes
“It’s not Halloween. We don’t do witch hunts.” — Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, at a press conference announcing the indictment of former state lawmaker Russ Jones on 10 felony counts stemming from his 2006 re-election campaign. Jones who lives in Yuma and represented Yuma’s legislative district, said he didn’t “have a clue” why he was investigated and charged by Maricopa County officials. He questioned whether they had standing to do so.
“If just staying (on a sidewalk) is now going to be unlawful, we’re really infringing on peoples’ right to be in public places.” — Sen. Albert Hale, D-2, regarding H2589, a bill that would criminalize job hunting on sidewalks and street corners.
Courts
The Arizona Supreme Court on April 17 issued a warrant for the execution of Robert Comer, who has fought for years to end his federal appeals process and to receive the death penalty. Comer will be executed on May 22 by lethal injection unless he elects to receive the gas chamber, according to Arizona Supreme Court.
