No budget vote this week after all

Arizona Capitol Reports Staff//April 21, 2009//[read_meter]

The Senate Appropriations Committee is not planning to vote on budget legislation on April 23, even though a hearing on such legislation was posted on the agenda last week.

"We are not going to be able to make the Thursday time to do the budget," said Senate President Bob Burns.

Burns said there is no one item holding up the budget.

"It's just a matter of the weight of all the things we have to go through," he said.

Sen. Thayer Verschoor, a Republican from Gilbert, said it simply takes time to go through all the options.

The Senate Appropriations Committee has scheduled to hear budget bills on April 23. Burns said lawmakers will not be ready for it.

The committee agenda is still officially posted on the Senate's Web site, but it is unlikely the hearing will actually occur.

Arizona faces an estimated $3 billion budget deficit. Republican lawmakers have been trying to hammer out a budget deal for the last several weeks now.

The Appropriations Committee has come up with a budget proposal, but it was $500 million short of solving the deficit.

Burns said lawmakers are being briefed on a new proposal that would close the entire deficit, but details have not been released publicly.
