Forest Service boosts funding for forest thinning project

The U.S. Forest Service is boosting the amount of money it is providing for a massive forest thinning project in northern Arizona.

The Arizona Daily Sun reports (http://bit.ly/1UK4qpnAi??) that the Forest Service announced that starting this year, the agency will allocate an additional $10 million per year for 10 years to the Four Forest Restoration Initiative to help speed up work on the 2.4 million-acre project.

Good Earth Power AZ holds a Forest Service contract with the goal of thinning 300,000 acres by 2022. Between October 2014 and October 2015, the company thinned 2,405 acres.

The additional money from the Forest Service will go to hire and contract dozens more workers to help with tree marking, botany surveys and other work that is required before thinning.var
