Blackman relaunches effort to release prisoners early

A 2020 legislative effort to expand early release opportunities for prisoners kicked off Monday morning with exhortations from advocates to think beyond incremental steps and warnings from the Arizona Department of Corrections that it doesn’t have the budget or staff to handle big changes.

Rep. David Stringer, R-Prescott, answers questions Wednesday about his comments which were interpreted by some as racist. Stringer said he was not a racist but simply was detailing his views on the effects of rapid immigration on the country. With him is the Rev. Groups call for end to solitary confinement

The American Civil Liberties Union and the American Friends Service Committee kicked off a campaign Tuesday to convince the state to do away with solitary confinement for prisoners and stop the construction of 500 maximum security beds.
