Report: DUI task force stops 20,000

More than 20,000 traffic stops have been made since the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety established a DUI task force to look for impaired drivers. Agency Director Alberto Gutier said Dec. 7 that more than 2,000 officers and deputies have been involved in the effort since it began on Thanksgiving weekend.

Ariz. official doesn’t have stance on texting ban

Arizona's highway safety director says he's not ready to say whether the state should ban texting while driving. Meeting in Georgia, the Governors Highway Safety Association reversed itself and came out for a texting ban. The group cited a Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study that found drivers who are texting increase the risk of a crash or near-crash by 23 times.
