My father taught me what law should guarantee — equality of opportunity

I love you dearly, Dad, and am humbled by the sacrifices you have undertaken for me and my successes in life. One day soon, the full equality you have pledged to me will be realized through the addition of the ERA to the U.S. Constitution, and you need not worry so much about the obstacles confronting me. The law will guarantee me equality in opportunity and I will make the absolute most of it, because that’s what you taught me.

There is no Irony in The Equal Rights Amendment

Cathi Herrod, our modern day Phyllis Schlafly, is correct: public policy often sounds better in theory than it plays out in reality. Which is why it’s essential that we pass an Equal Rights Amendment. As Ms. Herrod points out, “who can disagree with equal rights for women? No one.” She lists numerous laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex. But as she points out, laws and policies don’t always “live up to their names.”

That very notion is so etched in our nation’s history and seared in our hearts and minds that its absence defies logic.
