GOP Corporation Commission candidates agree to return some Clean Elections funding

Arizona’s campaign finance commission on Thursday will consider a proposed settlement agreement to have the three Republican candidates return a total of nearly $29,000 of public financing.

The Citizens Clean Elections Commission is considering the matter as a result of a complaint filed by the state Democratic Party against Corporation Commission candidates Susan Bitter Smith, Bob Burns and Bob Stump.

The commission’s executive director concluded that a pre-primary mailing by the Republicans illegally used some of their primary election funding for general election purposes.

The mailer targeted the three Democratic candidates. They and the Republicans were unopposed in the primary.

The Republicans deny that their mailer violated campaign finance laws. They say they want to settle the campaign finance case so they can focus on election issues.

    Clean Elections nailed Israel Torres for a similar offense a few years back… with TRIPLE the amount in fines AND he was ruled ineligible for Clean Elections funding for ten years.

    Why should these journeyman GOP candidates be let off easy? This is not their first rodeo.
    They all knew the rules and chose to disobey them.
