Concerned that members had not received proper notice of a previous meeting, the Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historic Names has once again voted to rename Squaw Peak in Phoenix as Piestewa Peak.
At the July 2 meeting, Patricia Boland, counsel to the board, said that questions had been raised whether three members of the board had received proper notice of the April 17 meeting at which the first vote was cast for changing the name of the peak.
Although Ms. Boland said her analysis suggested that the board members had received the agenda for the required 24 hours in advance of that meeting, Ms. Boland suggested that the board err on the side of caution and take a new vote. If the April 17 decision were challenged under a violation of the state’s Open Meeting Law, the actions of the board in that meeting could be nullified.
Board member Martin Pasqualetti said he felt confident that all nine members of the board had received proper notice of the April 17 meeting, but voted with the other six board members who were present July 2 in favor of the name change. Two members were absent. —
