A state commission plans a Veterans Day service to honor Arizona men and women who lost their lives while serving in the military in Iraq and Afghanistan. The memorial service is at Steele Indian Park, 300 E. Indian School Rd. in Phoenix on Nov. 11. Seating begins at noon.
The individuals being honored are: Nathan White, Joshua McIntosh, William T. Latham, Lori Piestewa, Nate Caldwell, Sean Cataudella, Alyssa R. Peterson, Spencer Karol, Jay Aubin, Fernando Padilla-Ramirez, Michael J. Williams and Raymond Losano.
The event is organized by the Governor’s Iraqi War Memorial Commission, a panel appointed earlier this year by Governor Napolitano. The memorial is being funded through private contributions and will be open to the public, the Governor’s Office said.
“This will be a somber, yet important occasion honoring our nation’s fallen military,” Ms. Napolitano said in a prepared statement. “It’s critical that we remember these fine Arizonans on the day set aside to pay tribute to all military lost in war and other actions.”
The service will include a 21-gun salute and a flyovers by Army National Guard Apache and U.S. Marine Corps Sea Knight helicopters. The 108th Army Band of the Arizona National Guard will lead the event’s music accompanied by the Mesa Fire Department Honor Guard of Bagpipes and Drums.
