Anybody — even a tortoise — can apparently obtain contact lenses.
Stephen Cohen, a Scottsdale optometrist, had no problem ordering contacts for his pet. All it took was eye measurements and the name of a veterinarian. Two boxes of Acuvue lenses arrived at his door — no questions asked.
But that’s about to change.
A federal law went into effect Feb. 4 that requires mail-order companies to verify that prescriptions are valid before shipping replacement lenses.
Also under the law, contact lens wearers will be able to shop for the best price. The law will require eye doctors to give patients their contact lens prescriptions even if they don’t ask for it. —
