Arizona’s private school tuition tax credit program has a big name and an even bigger impact on our state’s most vulnerable youngsters.
Quite simply, this program allows ordinary folks to make a big difference.
Arizonans can make a tax-deductible donation to organizations giving children tuition money to go to a private school. The program helps kids get out of a bad school and into a good one.
Unfortunately, this program is in danger of being destroyed. Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard last month defended the program before the U.S. Supreme Court.
While the Arizona Supreme Court found this program to be constitutional, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declared that it violates separation of church and state. Mr. Goddard argued that the federal government can’t interfere with state tax collection, and 40 other attorneys general support him.
However, the most important argument wasn’t presented to the Supreme Court. Most importantly, all kids deserve a great education. Any program that gives kids options gives them a chance to have a great education.
