Governor Applauded For Backing Tumacacori Highlands Proposal

Arizona Capitol Reports Staff//December 3, 2004//[read_meter]

On behalf of our thousands of members statewide, the Arizona League of Conservation Voters would like to recognize the continued commitment of Governor Napolitano to the preservation and protection of our wilderness areas.

The governor’s support of the Tumacacori Highlands Proposal is a clear example of her leadership on issues of land management, natural habitat preservation, and environmental protection. The proposal, which is now being considered by the U.S. House of Representatives, would designate 84,573 acres of federal land north of the Arizona/Mexico border as a wilderness area.

The designation of this land will ensure that generations to come can enjoy the beautiful mountains, serene deserts, and rare plant and animal species only found in this area of the country. The designation will also provide positive benefits for the local economy — bringing tourists from around the world to the area to enjoy hunting, fishing, camping and other recreational activities.

We applaud the governor for her steadfast dedication to the preservation of Arizona’s natural beauty and we urge the entire Arizona congressional delegation to vote “yes” on the Tumacacori Highlands Proposal.
