Yuma Growers Say Border Checkpoints Kept Employees From Working

Arizona Capitol Reports Staff//December 3, 2004//[read_meter]

A growers association claims U.S. Border Patrol checkpoints placed in the Yuma area kept some field workers from working the harvest.

One grower said 30 per cent of his field workers didn’t show up for work because of the Border Patrol checkpoints, said Matt McInery, executive vice president of the California-based Western Growers Association.

The growers association asked federal authorities to move checkpoints along U.S. Highway 95 closer to the Mexican border during the three-week field harvest, Mr. McInery said.

The Border Patrol said checkpoints are routinely set up and moved.

Checkpoints along Highway 95 were not part of a crackdown on migrant workers and have been taken down, said Joe Brigman, a spokesman for the Border Patrol in Yuma.—
