State Senate President Ken Bennett says he’s not running for governor in 2006.
Mr. Bennett, about to begin his fourth two-year term in the Senate, said he’s shelving his earlier consideration of a run for the office.
“I am focusing completely on the Senate and as things stand right now I am not planning to run for governor,’ Mr. Bennett said during an interview with Associated Press reporter Paul Davenport.
Mr. Bennett said his calculation against running for governor in 2006 — he won’t limit his options further — boils down to the fact that he and his wife have three children still at home.
At least two other prominent Republicans, 5th District U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth and soon-to-be-former Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley, have said they may run for governor.
