Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Pearce, son of Rep. Russell Pearce, R-18, is “doing great” after surgery following his being shot while executing a search warrant.
Sean Pearce, an 11-year veteran of the department was part of a seven-member SWAT team that came under fire from a suspect in a mobile home in Mesa. The deputies were acting on a search warrant in connection with a homicide investigation. A man in the home opened fire, hitting Deputy Pearce in the abdomen, below his protective vest. Another deputy shot the suspect in the face.
Deputy Pearce was taken to a hospital where he underwent an operation that included removing a small section of intestine, according to a statement from the office of Russell Pearce at the House, where the elder Pearce is Appropriations chairman. Russell Pearce himself served with the sheriff’s office for 23 years, and he too was wounded – while struggling with an armed suspect in 1977.
