A new law taking effect in 2005 will allow thousands of Arizona drivers to get back fees paid on license plates they are no longer using.
The state ad been keeping fees up to $350 from drivers who left the state, stopped driving or bought another car before selling the old one.
But beginning Jan. 1, the Motor Vehicle Division will refund the unused portion of license fees to drivers who have a credit of at least $12. The law also covers drivers who sold a car in 2004.
Arizona law requires drivers to keep license plates when they sell their car, and usually, they can transfer remaining credit to the new car.
But drivers who bought a new one before selling their old one were wasting credit before the new law.
To get a refund, drivers must remove the plate when they sell the vehicle and return it to MVD within 30 days.
