Arizona Capitol Reports Staff//January 7, 2005//[read_meter]

Byron Garrett, most recently a director in the Governor’s Office for Children, Youth and Families, has been appointed by Governor Napolitano as policy adviser for faith-based and community initiatives.

Mr. Garrett, who has been in the Napolitano administration since 2003, assumes his new duties immediately.

President Bush has urged state governments to involve and fund faith-based organizations in the delivery of social services. Ms. Napolitano’s budget proposal will not be revealed until Jan. 14, she said.

Mr. Garrett also was a special assistant for the School Readiness Board. He is a commissioner on the Phoenix Youth and Education and Human Relations commissions and is working on a doctorate degree from Pepperdine University in California. —
