A new nationwide search to replace the retiring director of the state’s top law enforcement agency is underway after the governor’s nominee unexpectedly withdrew from consideration Jan. 5 amid speculation he was not willing to resign from his current job.
Last November, Governor Napolitano selected U.S. Marshal David Gonzales to serve as director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Mr. Gonzales was unavailable for comment, though he did tell other media outlets the issue was one of “timing,” saying there was a disagreement over when he needed to begin his duties for the state.
Reporters were told that Mr. Gonzales did not want to resign his post as U.S. marshal until the Senate confirmation of his new position was complete. Reportedly, he did not want to wait until the end of session, when the Senate typically confirms the governor’s appointees.
However, Senate President Ken Bennett, R-1, said he had met with Mr. Gonzales about moving the confirmation to the beginning of the session, which begins Jan. 10.
“We were willing to work with him on that,” Mr. Bennett said. “I don’t think that would have been a reason for him to withdraw.”
DPS Lt. Col. David Felix will take over as the department’s interim director until a permanent replacement to Dennis Garrett, the current director, is appointed. Mr. Garrett will retire Jan. 16.
Ms. Napolitano said a selection committee is being formed to conduct the search for Mr. Garrett’s permanent replacement. The list of committee members is still being finalized. —
