A Chandler-based citizens group has filed an application for a recall petition against Republican Sen. John Huppenthal, saying he “is out of touch” with his constituents.
Len Gutman of “Recall Huppenthal” said the group has until July 15 to submit 16,422 valid signatures of registered voters in the district to bring about a recall election. His application was filed March 17 with the Secretary of State’s Office.
The application states Mr. Huppenthal, who has served his East Valley district since 1993, has disregarded voters in the district by failing to support adequate funding for Kyrene schools, voting against additional funding for full-day kindergarten and by voting to permit people to carry firearms into establishments that serve liquor.
In a March 17 column in the Chandler Republic, Mr. Huppenthal listed numerous actions he has taken in the Legislature to support Kyrene schools and education statewide.
“[A]nyone familiar with my history knows that I have always helped my constituents when asked,” he wrote.
Mr. Huppenthal, R-20, returned to the Senate this year from the House by defeating incumbent Republican Slade Mead in the 2004 primary.
Election laws permit the circulation of a recall petition against a state legislator five days after the legislative session begins. —
