Panel OKs New Settlement With Lawmaker

Arizona Capitol Reports Staff//June 3, 2005//[read_meter]

A state campaign finance commission approved a settlement May 26 that calls for a state legislator to pay a bigger penalty than under an earlier negotiated agreement rejected by the panel.

The Citizens Clean Elections Commission voted unanimously to accept the revised settlement negotiated with Sen. Ron Gould, R-3, a commission spokeswoman said.

Under the settlement, the freshman lawmaker will pay a $1,000 civil penalty to the commission. The commission on May 11 rejected an earlier settlement proposal based on a $500 penalty.

The commission originally sought a $3,630 fine against Mr. Gould after concluding that he was at least 33 days late in reporting $4,300 in spending for phone calls for his 2004 primary election campaign.

Mr. Gould has said he didn’t think he had to report the spending when the investigator said he did. —
