A chain of grocery stores will begin selling pins statewide to help raise money for a Sept. 11 memorial on the Capitol Mall.
The $5 pins will honor the victims of the 2001 attacks, and all proceeds will go toward building a monument at Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza. They will be sold at Bashas’ stores.
“It’s not just honoring the people, it’s trying to preserve the spirit of what that day is about,” said Steve Speisman, a Scottsdale teacher whose brother was aboard the plane that crashed into the Pentagon. He is a member of the commission.
The commission ordered 30,000 pins to be sold at least through Sept. 11, 2005.
So far, the commission has raised about $80,000 of the estimated $500,000 needed to build the memorial. —
