Dos and Don’ts of Avoiding Moving Scams

Arizona Capitol Reports Staff//August 5, 2005//[read_meter]

DO get estimates from at least three moving companies in your area

DON’T believe an estimate based on cubic feet; charges are determined by weight

DO have the companies come to your house to give you an in-home estimate

DON’T hesitate to ask questions about price differences between companies – some companies may provide additional services

DO have the company weigh the truck without your goods on it

DON’T use a mover to transport confidential information, like bank statements, or valuable items like jewelry

DO contact the Secretary of State’s Office to inspect the company’s Articles of Incorporation

DON’T be reluctant to ask the moving company for references and call them

DO ask the company if they will subcontract the work to another firm

DON’T turn over your property if a moving company other than the one you hired shows up on moving day

DO pay with a credit card that will reimburse you for fraudulent transactions

DON’T make your final payment until the contract is fulfilled and you are satisfied

DO call Weights and Measures at (623) 463-9940 if you feel you are being scammed
