(Phoenix – August 17) Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard today approved new voting procedures and identification requirements to comply with Proposition 200, which was passed by voters in November 2004.
Secretary of State Jan Brewer submitted the new procedures to the Attorney General’s Office for approval Aug. 12.
In his approval letter to the Secretary of State, Mr. Goddard clarified a number of details that were unclear or ambiguous in the Secretary of State’s proposed procedures, such as whether or not a person who has changed his or her name but whose identification does not reflect that will be allowed to vote a provisional ballot.
After the Governor approves the procedures and ID rules, Mr. Goddard will forward them to the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice for approval, according to a press release. He says he is requesting an expedited review so local election officials could put the procedures in place for the November elections.
