Arizona Capitol Times reporters Phil Riske and Jim Small have received writing awards from the Arizona Newspapers Association.

Mr. Riske, the newspaper’s Senate reporter, earned a second place in the Best Sustained Coverage or Series category for articles covering medical malpractice legislation.

Mr. Small, who covers the House, won a third place in News Feature category for a story on lawmakers who have adopted children. The story also explored foster care issues.

The newspaper, which publishes each Friday, competes in the 3,500 — 10,000 circulation category.

The Arizona Newspapers Association presented its awards Sept. 17 at its annual Better Newspapers Contest lunch, which concluded the 2005 fall convention in Scottsdale.

The association membership includes most of Arizona’s newspapers. —
