A legislative oversight committee opted not to relocate a proposed state archives building closer to the Legislature but did decide to seek a new construction manager.
At its Dec. 14 meeting, Legislative Council also adopted a subcommittee’s recommendation to complete the design for the proposed State Library and Archives building.
House Speaker Jim Weiers, R-10, told the committee he had concerns about Holder Construction, the company that had been signed as the construction manager at risk in February by the Department of Administration. Originally, the building was under that department’s oversight, but last year’s budget transferred control of the project and $30 million to complete it to Legislative Council, which had no obligation to honor the previous contract.
Mr. Weiers said he learned just before the meeting that Holder Construction had been having problems completing a project for Paradise Valley Community College on time and on budget.
The council opted to seek a new construction manager at risk to complete the construction of the building, which will be located west of the Capitol complex, near 19th Avenue and Jackson Street.
The plans for the building now have to be approved by the Joint Committee on Capital Review, which is expected to take action at its Dec. 20 meeting.
