Sen. Barbara Leff, R-11, has been named American Cancer Society Legislator of the Year for leadership and commitment in passing S1297, Skin Cancer Prevention Instruction in Schools, during the 2005 session.
Ms. Leff received the honor Feb. 9 before a crowd of more than 100 cancer survivors, patients, caregivers and healthcare providers.
The bill, which passed the Legislature and was signed by Governor Napolitano April 25, requires K-8 instruction on protecting your skin against the sun. Arizona has the second highest rate of skin cancer in the world and was the first state in the country to pass legislation requiring prevention instruction in schools. Schools began implementing the legislation last fall using the Arizona Department of Health Services SunWise Program.
The award was presented by American Cancer Society volunteers and Great West Division Board Members, Van Wolf and Marge Drugay.
“Government officials make decisions about health issues every day that affect our lives,” Mr. Wolf said.
“Lawmakers are important in promoting public policy that benefits cancer research, prevention and early detection programs, treatment, and access to quality care for all Arizonans. Senator Leff demonstrated true leadership and dedication by being the first in the country to pass a skin cancer prevention bill and ultimately help save lives.”
