Capitol quotes
“I am obviously broken hearted by the governor’s action. She lost her chance, twice, to correct a grave injustice.” — Defense attorney Mel McDonald, regarding Gov. Janet Napolitano’s veto of S1166, which would force a new trial for his former client Harold Fish, a hiker claiming self-defense who was convicted of murder.
“These new laws are the latest evidence that this is still a democracy.” — Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, on the passing of bills to enforce sanctions against employers who hire illegal immigrants and to help hold illegal immigrants accused of felonies in jail without bond.
Goddard recalled
A petition to recall Attorney General Terry Goddard was filed with the Secretary of State’s Office on July 5. Robert Winn, chairman of Independent Voters, filed the petition on grounds that a voter registration form approved in 2005 omits a “no party preference” option “to stop a rapid increase in the number of independent voter registrations.”
