Mexican soldiers in place at border crossings

YUMA – Members of the Mexican army are in place at border crossings until new customs officers begin inspecting traffic passing through the port of entry.

The Mexican customs administrator at San Luis Rio Colorado said soldiers will be providing security for both pedestrian and vehicle lanes heading into Mexico.

The 21 officers assigned to San Luis have not yet been issued their duty weapons.

Mexican soldiers have been stationed at all ports along the border since the weekend.

The soldiers’ assignment comes on the heels of the Mexican government’s announcement that it was swapping out customs inspectors at all the ports on the U.S.-Mexican border with better-trained and more-professional officers.
