Rios: Lawmakers shouldn’t get daily allowance

Luige del Puerto//August 10, 2010//[read_meter]

A senior Democrat has introduced a bill to keep lawmakers from receiving a daily allowance during the ongoing special session.

The bill, SB1001, isn’t going anywhere because it is technically outside the call of the special session. The session was convened specifically to address the issue of secret ballots for union elections.

But for Democrats, the bill makes a point.

“Given our state’s dire economic condition it is irresponsible for Republicans to convene this costly, partisan special session to fix their own legislative mistakes,” Senate Assistant Minority Leader Rebecca Rios, the bill’s sponsor, said in a news release.

Lawmakers get subsistence allowance – or per diem – from the state during regular and special sessions. Lawmakers from outside of Maricopa County receive $60 a day, and lawmakers from Maricopa County receive $35 a day.

The subsistence payment is reduced after the 120th day of a regular session.
