Board, County Attorney working together again

The Maricopa County attorney’s office will once again be representing the county Board of Supervisors in civil court cases.

Supervisors last year took the job away from former County Attorney Andrew Thomas because of lawsuits Thomas filed against members of the board.

The Arizona Republic reports the board and new County Attorney Bill Montgomery agreed the conflicts between elected officials should end further litigation and costs to county taxpayers.

“Both the board and Bill Montgomery desire that the conflicts between elected offices in Maricopa County be brought promptly to a close, with no further litigation or cost to county taxpayers,” they wrote in a joint statement.

In September, The Republic reported infighting among Maricopa County government lawmakers, administrators and elected officials had cost taxpayers $5.6 million dollars.

Upon taking office in November, Montgomery pledged to mend fences.

“At the end of the day, it’s putting down on paper for the supervisors that this is how we will address things,” Montgomery said.

Supervisors said they are optimistic they can work with Montgomery’s office.

“The voters are the folks that really fixed the problem by giving us a good, ethical lawyer: Bill Montgomery,” Supervisor Andy Kunasek said. “What’s left are details, which we are quickly and professionally working out in the best interest of the taxpayers.”
