Senate President Russell Pearce’s allies have said that recall challenger Jerry Lewis would be soundly defeated if he faced Pearce in a Republican primary election.
The Nov. 8 recall election is open to voters of all parties, plus independents, giving Lewis a fighting chance to take down the Senate’s No. 1 Republican, political insiders say.
But a match-up pitting the pair in a future Republican primary would likely not ever happen – assuming they don’t move.
Pearce and Lewis have been drawn into separate legislative districts, according to the latest draft map adopted by the state’s Independent Redistricting Commission.
If Lewis does decide to run for the Legislature next year, or run for re-election if he beats Pearce on Nov. 8, he would face a separate set of challenges.
According to the latest maps, Lewis resides in a competitive district that leans Democratic.
District 26 includes Tempe, but it eats into west Mesa, grabbing Lewis’s home as well.
Senate Minority Leader David Schapira is in the district, as are fellow Democratic Reps. Ben Arredondo and Ed Ableser.
The district’s voter make up is competitive.
It is 32.4 percent Democratic and 27.6 percent Republican.
Pearce, meanwhile, is squarely within new District 25.
Pearce’s district includes most of Mesa and is solidly Republican. Under the latest map, Pearce would be pitted against fellow Republican Sen. Rich Crandall.
