Despite earning the ire of the right wing of their party when they supported Medicaid expansion, Republican Reps. Bob Robson and Jeff Dial are holding strong in their races to the House and Senate, respectively.

Political newcomer Jill Norgaard is holding a slight lead for the GOP nomination in the district’s first House seat, with early ballots already counted. Robson is slightly behind her, 100 votes short, but still enough to hold the second seat.

Dial is leading former Arizona Republican Party Chairman Tom Morrissey in the Senate GOP primary by almost 3,000 votes, with early ballots and a small percent of precincts already counted.

Norgaard, a vocal critic of Medicaid expansion, holds the lead in the House with 6,683 votes from early ballots so far. Robson is trailing her closely, with 6,580 votes.

Outside groups, including Gov. Jan Brewer’s Arizona Legacy committee, spent heavily to ensure Robson’s and Dial’s victories. The group spent more than $100,000 to support Robson and nearly $92,000 to support Dial. Other outside groups spent $40,000 opposing Robson, although they did not spend significant money against Dial.

Republicans John King and David Pheanis are in third and fourth in the race for the two House seats, with 4,501votes and 3,545 votes respectively.

Besides the outside spending, Robson spent nearly $71,000 in the campaign.

John King spent $20,000 in the campaign and was boosted by another $22,000 in outside spending.

Jill Norgaard spent $40,000 and was boosted by $12,000 in outside spending. She was attacked by almost $2,000 in outside spending.

David Pheanis spent almost $32,000 in his campaign.

The two winners of the House GOP primary will face Democrat Denise “Mitzi” Epstein in the general election.

The winner of the GOP primary in the Senate will face Democrat Janie Hydrick in this Republican-leaning competitive district, which covers parts of Phoenix, Chandler, Tempe and Mesa.
