Violating campfire restrictions now requires court date

Anyone cited for violating restrictions on campfires or smoking in Arizona’s national forests will have to show up in court.

That’s a change from previous years when fines that came with citations could be paid without appearing before a judge.

U.S. Magistrate Mark Aspey in Flagstaff says the change reflects an ongoing concern about the risk of wildfires on Arizona’s public lands.

The fire danger currently is low or moderate in Arizona’s six national forests. Land managers consider the weather, existing moisture, fire activity and what’s available to fight wildfires before deciding whether to implement fire restrictions.

Low-level restrictions last year went into effect starting in mid-April around northern Arizona.var
