After 40 years, the last of the State Energy Program’s employees have been fired or reassigned as Gov. Doug Ducey and his administration shuttered the program to cut down on overhead costs.

The Arizona Republic reports (http://goo.gl/8Ka1mT) that the five remaining state employees, who had worked to secure federal grants to help with energy savings, were fired Friday. The Department of Administration on Friday transferred two weatherization workers to the Housing Department.

A Ducey spokesman says the move was to cut back on costs and eliminate duplication of staffing.

The State Energy Program was created in 1975 and helped state agencies, schools, cities and towns with energy savings and securing federal grants for energy projects.var
