The assistant director of Arizona’s Department of Economic Security says her boss bought employees alcohol during the workday after they agreed to give up their job protections.
The Arizona Republic reportsAi??that DES Director Tim Jeffries acknowledged Wednesday that he bought alcohol, soft drinks and food for the DES Nogales staff as a reward after he converted workers there to at-will employment. He says the drinking occurred after the workday had ended and says he doesn’t remember when he left the restaurant to return to Phoenix.
Assistant DES Director Leah Landrum Taylor says she didn’t have anything to drink because they were all at work. The state employee handbook says employees may not be impaired by alcohol or drugs while one duty.var Since when is it “immoral” or against State employment policy to have an after-hours and off-site get together with food and drink at a restaurant? Perhaps, when your goal is to hang Director J, the fact that he picked up the tab is what makes it immoral …
Apparently they were offered drink at work, Martha. As a reward for agreeing to renouncing their state-granted job status. So on one count, Jeffries’ behavior was just crass. On the other, in that it was no doubt a drink or be further skewered situation, immoral. Get it?
If it was during business hours then I would agree that it is a violation of State policy and even unethical. However, I haven’t seen any report of when this party took place. I assumed it was after work. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa for making that assumption! I will admit that I don’t see this as particularly crass or immoral. After all, those of us who are uncovered have gladly accepted the merit bonuses Director J has been able to secure for us and no one has called that immoral or crass. I’d be more than happy to have him throw in a six pack with the merit bonus as long as I drink it after work! 🙂
